Practice Training Contract
As a firm that is driven to help clients succeed, our people are constantly challenged to raise their game and add value to clients and their businesses. Although at times challenging, our work makes life rewarding for our people as well.
As much as we would be guiding you throughout your training contract, do expect to be thrown into the deep end to fend for yourself and quickly find your feet. You have to learn to be self-motivated and responsible for the tasks entrusted to you.
The best way to learn is to get hands-on experience as you learn at a faster rate and would be in a position to better appreciate that experience. After all, we think of you as a potential colleague, and we have a vested interest in ensuring that you become a very good lawyer. That said, our partners are always there to help and guide you along. We have an open-door policy which we are very proud of.
How do I apply?
Prepare and deposit the following with us by clicking on the “Apply Now” button below. Please note that all applications will close by 30 September of the year preceding the year that you would like to commence your training contract. Only shortlisted candidates will be notified.
Are my grades important?
You are where you are today because you have what it takes and academic results, though important, is no entirely the true measure of your ability. We also want to see what you can do as opposed to what you have already done. Amongst other things, we also look for abilities, CCAs, your values and your vision, and base it on the needs of the practice.
How will I be trained?
Each trainee will be assigned a Supervising Solicitor who will be made known to you prior to your commencement. Your Supervising Solicitor will be assigning you with tasks and responsibilities. He/She may in the process assign you to a junior associate to be your “buddy” to guide you with your work and overall learning experience with the firm.
Monthly meetings will be conducted with you and your Supervising Solicitor for updates on your progress.
Singapore Institute of Legal Education (SILE) has issued Guidelines to assist Supervising Solicitors on the instructions given to Trainees. Accompanying the Guidelines is a Checklist to guide the Partners in planning the training and instructions of their Trainees.
Will I be allocated to the area that I am interested in?
We will try our best to suit your learning needs. If you are interested to rotate between Practices during your term with us, that can be arranged as well.
What is your rotation policy?
Trainees may opt to work in the following major departments:
- Capital Markets
- Litigation & Dispute Resolution
- Intellectual Property & Technology
- Banking & Finance
- Real Estate
If a trainee requests for training in other areas of practice, arrangements will be made to assign the trainee to that area of practice for a sustainable period, time permitting. The training programme will be modified accordingly.
How many training contracts will be awarded and what are the retention rates?
Training contracts are awarded based on the firm’s business requirements and the number of training contracts awarded varies every year. The firm takes on Trainees with a view to retain and invest in them to build a strong legal career with us. Therefore, we are looking to retain outstanding trainees who are passionate in what they do and share our values in being Ambitious For Clients, Builds Strong Relationships, Seek Innovation and have An Instinct For Business. We are also looking to retain trainees who are innovative, adaptable, self-motivated, are able to work both in a team environment and independently while displaying an aptitude for learning.
